Getting to Know Ragdolls
Preparing for a Lifetime With a Ragdoll
Bringing home a Ragdoll isn’t a purchase — it’s the start of a relationship that can last the better part of two decades. Here’s the honest picture.
More Than a Purchase
Bringing home a Ragdoll isn’t a purchase — it’s the start of a relationship that can last the better part of two decades.
We think the most loving thing a breeder can do is be completely honest about what that commitment really looks like: the time, the money, and the love. Not to talk you out of it — but so that when you’re ready, you’re truly ready, and your cat gets the wonderful life they deserve from day one to their very last.
A 15+ Year Relationship
Ragdolls typically live 12 to 17 years, and with great care many reach their late teens. That’s a wonderfully long time to share your life with a devoted companion — and it’s also a genuine long-term responsibility.
The kitten curled in your arms will be with you through moves, job changes, relationships, and new chapters of life. Part of preparing is picturing not just the adorable kitten, but the steady, snuggly adult cat they’ll be for fifteen-plus years, and making sure there’s room for them through all of it.
What It Costs, Month to Month
Here’s the good news: the cost of a cat sounds big until you break it down — and then it turns out to be a handful of small, familiar line items, a lot like any steady part of the household budget.
Let’s look at it honestly and simply, month by month:
Figures current as of 2026.
For most families that comes out to roughly $70–$220 a month — think of it like a modest, groceries-sized line in your budget, for a companion who becomes part of the family. Some months run a bit higher (a vet visit, a new cat tree) and plenty run lower. Spread across your cat’s long life, it’s very livable when you plan for it.
And the one-time setup
Getting started — carrier, litter box, bowls, bed, scratcher, and a first round of toys — usually runs about $300–$800 up front, a little more if you splurge on a fancy cat tree or a self-cleaning litter box. After that first happy shopping trip, you settle right into the easy monthly rhythm above. You’ll find the exact carrier, bowls, and starter gear we use on our Aurora Favorites list.
The One to Plan For: Vet Care & Emergencies
Routine care is simple and predictable — and honestly, it doesn’t have to be expensive. A knowledgeable owner handles most everyday things at home, and a good vet keeps the rest reasonable.
The one thing genuinely worth planning for separately is the unexpected — the occasional surprise like a swallowed hair tie or a dental issue. These aren’t common, but a true surprise can range from a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars, so a little planning ahead means you’d never have to think twice. Two easy ways to be ready:
Monthly premiums, often around $10–$95 a month for a cat, turn a scary surprise bill into a manageable one. Easiest to get — and cheapest — when your cat is young and healthy.
If you’d rather self-insure, set aside a cushion. Many vets suggest $1,000–$2,000, so you’re never choosing between your budget and your cat’s health.
Either way, deciding before you need it is what lets you say yes to the best care in a stressful moment.
And the biggest money-saver of all is knowledge: the more you understand your cat, the better you can advocate for them. More on that in our guide to finding the right vet for your Ragdoll.
Your Time, Attention & Everyday Life
Ragdolls are famously people-oriented — they don’t want to be left alone all day. Beyond the money, a cat asks for your time and a little planning:
Ragdolls thrive on companionship and interactive play. They’re a follow-you-room-to-room breed, and they’re happiest when they’re part of the family’s day.
Daily scooping, fresh food and water, and a regular brush-out — their silky coat needs help staying mat-free.
Someone has to feed and check on your cat — a sitter, a trusted neighbor, or boarding — which is both a cost and a bit of coordination.
Moves, a new baby, a new pet, a busier season of life. A lifelong commitment means keeping your cat through all of it, and planning ahead so you can.

Why Two Might Be the Right Choice
That last point — Ragdolls don’t want to be left alone all day — is the reason we sometimes suggest two kittens instead of one. If nobody’s home during the day, if you have an older cat or dog who won’t want a playmate, or if you have a big family where one cat would be in constant demand, two is worth considering.
Here’s the honest math, since this is the page for it. Two kittens is $7,000 up front. We don’t discount pairs. Then double the food, double the litter, double every vet visit, double the dental work at eight, double whatever the last years bring — for fifteen to twenty years.
If that’s comfortable, two is a lovely decision. If it isn’t, one well-cared-for cat is a far better outcome than two you’re stretched to keep. Nobody regrets the cat they could afford.
Why It’s So Worth It
For the families who are ready, a Ragdoll is one of the great joys of life.
Here’s the other side of that honesty: you’re signing up for fifteen-plus years of a gentle, affectionate companion who greets you at the door, sleeps curled against you, and becomes woven into the fabric of your family. When you go in clear-eyed and prepared, the commitment stops feeling heavy and just becomes what it is — a long, warm friendship that gives back far more than it asks.
That’s exactly the life we want for every kitten we raise.
