One of the most fun — and sometimes surprising — parts of raising a Ragdoll is watching them grow up. Ragdolls are famously slow to mature, taking their sweet time becoming the big, silky, laid-back companions the breed is known for.
Here’s what to expect at each stage, so nothing catches you off guard and you can savor every phase.
Kitten → Gentle Giant
The Kitten
This is the wild, wonderful, into-everything phase. Expect zoomies, midnight play, and a whole lot of growing — most Ragdolls are around 6 to 8 pounds by six months and still filling out.
Their signature floppiness starts to peek through as early as 8 to 12 weeks, but there’s plenty of energy to burn first. The best thing you can do here is lean into play: daily wand-toy sessions and lots of enrichment help all that kitten energy go somewhere good.
The “Teenager”
Here’s the stage that surprises people most — and the one behind the question we hear all the time: when is my cat going to calm down?
Around a year, Ragdolls hit an adolescent phase: more independent, a little more mischievous, and still bursting with energy. Nothing is wrong — they’re simply teenagers, still growing in body and personality.
Keep up your routines, your play, and your patience. The mellow lap cat you’re picturing really is on the way; they’re just not there quite yet.
Growing Into Adulthood
This is when it starts to click. Energy usually begins to settle somewhere around 18 to 24 months, the wild play mellows into come cuddle on the couch, and their personality really comes into its own.
They’re close to full size now, and that famous floppy, follow-you-around Ragdoll affection is in full bloom.
Fully Grown
Unlike most cats, Ragdolls keep growing and maturing until they’re about three or four years old — so your kitten will keep surprising you for years with just how big and beautiful they become.
Fully grown, many males reach around 15 to 20 pounds and females around 10 to 15 pounds, all of it calm, steady, and devoted. The difference between the tiny kitten who came home and the substantial, serene cat they become is one of the great joys of the breed.
They’ll Change on the Outside, Too
The growing-up isn’t only about size and temperament — your Ragdoll’s looks transform too:
Traditional pointed kittens are born nearly white. Their color develops gradually over the first weeks. Mink kittens are the exception — they arrive already showing colour, and deepen from there.
Color keeps deepening. Their points and coat richen over the first couple of years, usually settling around age two to three.
The silky adult coat fills in. That plush, flowing Ragdoll coat comes in beautifully by about 12 to 18 months.
Their eyes deepen — brilliant blue on the pointed cats, a striking aqua on the minks.
